What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a procedure that suctions fat cells out of the body using a tube (called a cannula) connected to a suction machine. Contemporary liposuction involves injecting a special fluid underneath the skin which numbs the target area and shrinks blood vessels. This minimises complications, especially the possibility of blood loss post-surgery.
Historically, ‘old-style’ liposuction surgeons would complete procedures under general anaesthetic. Imprecise procedure methods would often cause large volume blood loss either during or after the procedure, leading to high complication risks. Contemporary procedures are highly-tuned to minimise risk.
How Does Liposuction Work?
Liposuction reduces fat cells in stubborn areas, sculpting and reshaping the body. The result is noticeable differences to the patient’s contours to achieve a desired aesthetic. It is important to note that liposuction is not a procedure designed for weight loss.
Liposuction contours the body by removing excess fat from target areas. To ensure that liposuction is the right option for you, every patient should have a thorough assessment by their surgeon prior. Liposuction works… when performed by experienced hands, on the right candidates.

Newest Liposuction Procedures
Here at Chelsea Cosmetics Melbourne, we’re proud that our dedicated team can offer you the most cutting-edge technology for achieving the look you’ve always wanted.
Laser lipolysis is the newest type of liposuction for patients looking to reshape their bodies. A small incision in the skin is made and a special probe that melts fat is inserted. Dissolved fat is removed via Power-assisted liposuction (PAL), a less traumatic method that employs vibrations to loosen fat before suctioning it out of the target area.
PAL doesn’t need the pulling or pushing of conventional liposuction, so its use (with laser lipolysis) delivers superior results with reduced downtime and complications.
- Less-invasive methods
- Minimised trauma
- Reduced downtime
- Fewer complications
- Excellent quality results
Most Effective Liposuction
All liposuction techniques have the same fundamental purpose: to reduce stubborn fat in a chosen target area. The effectiveness of liposuction, and quality of the results, depends on the surgeon’s experience and the technique employed.
Types of liposuction are mainly distinguished from one another by differences in recovery time, complication risks, and smoothness of the skin post-procedure.
Laser and Vaser liposuction are the two most recent liposuction procedures and are superior to conventional liposuction in terms of quality of results produced, and downtime required.
Key benefits of VASER lipo® include:
- Only a single session is needed to produce great results
- Significantly shorter recovery times
- More advanced body contouring options
- No invasive surgery
- Smooths skin gently and can be used in delicate areas
- Refine and accentuates musculature.

What is Laser Liposuction?
Laser liposuction uses lasers set on a specific wavelength to dissolve fat cells and heat and tighten skin. Heating the skin stimulates collagen cells and shrinks connective tissues, causing skin to retract and tighten for long-lasting results.
Laser lipolysis is highly effective and requires less downtime than conventional liposuction, resulting in decreased bruising and higher-quality results.
- Reduced downtime
- Decreased bruising and scarring post-surgery
- Highly effective with high quality results

What is Liposculpture?
Liposculpture is liposuction applied to small areas for precision results. A thinner cannula is used for accuracy to target small areas of fat or for targeted body shaping after the main bulk of fat has been removed.
Liposuction Results
Liposuction results differ between patients because of individual characteristics. The volume of fat to be removed, amount of excess skin prior to the procedure, the surgeon’s experience levels, and the liposuction technology used will all influence the end result.
Dr. Attalla will provide a realistic appraisal of your results in your initial consultation and assessment. This discussion will help us decide if liposuction is the right procedure for you.

Liposuction vs Tummy Tuck
Liposuction reduces fat by sucking fat cells out of the body and can be used in patients with little or no excess skin.
A tummy tuck (or abdominoplasty) is a procedure where patients with moderate-severe excess or saggy skin, who aren’t good candidates for liposuction, have extra skin excised.
Is Liposuction Safe?
All surgical procedures have side effects; however, modern liposuction is considerably safe than conventional liposuction.
Possible complications include: contour defects, pain and discomfort, bruising, permanent skin colour changes, infection, emboli, hematomas or seromas. The most common of these is contour irregularities, with an incidence of 2.7%. Patients may also experience allergic reactions to medication or local anaesthetic intoxication.
Hyperesthesia and dysesthesia are common surgical side effects, and gradually improve over three-six months after surgery. Hyperpigmentation is a relatively infrequent condition and will gradually diminish. Infection is extremely rare (<1% occurrence), possibly due to a combination of sterile techniques, small incisions and the antibacterial effects of lidocaine.
How Much is Liposuction?
Liposuction costs $2990 per area in an average person with a BMI of 25%. Price increases as BMI increases, as excess fat requires additional surgical time.
If the patient has mild excess skin and requires laser lipolysis, we charge $500 per area.
Target areas include: upper and lower abdomen; chin; anterior and posterior arms; anterior, posterior and lower bra folds; love handles; mons pubis; hips; anterior and posterior thighs; outer and inner thighs; inner and anterior knees; inner and outer legs; and ankles.
How much is Liposuction of the Stomach?
Liposuction of the stomach for the average person is $5800. If the patient has mild excess skin and requires laser lipolysis, we charge $500 per area.
Liposuction Recovery Time
Conventional liposuction has a recovery time of 2-3 weeks, while Laser or Vaser lipolysis have a recovery time of 3-7 days.
